OK, I have a domain, now what?
Hmmm, OK I feel slightly out of my depth, but that's fine, I have the domain, I just need to have some free web hosting thats all. I tried this one site which I wont name and they were terrible; horrible interface, didnt explain anything. I wonder if there's some sort of crash-course on the net somewhere... Must investigate.

Socciblog Updated
Well I've added various elements and whatsits around the page to add a bit of stickiness and make it look a little bit less bland. Oh and adsense too. Helps a bit with the money side of things.

Domain name - Check!
OK, so I now officially have www.soccipedia.com thanks to Google Apps, and the email address Andy@Soccipedia.com. Now, there are many joint ventures that I work on where the design and functionality is totally top notch thanks to my business partner being a total geek. But since my knowledge of computer code is limited to basic html, I'm having to use the options that google is giving me. They don't look to limited to be fair which is good, and looks mega simple to use.
Hopefully this will be a suitable platform to begin with.

Beginnings
Hmmm ok, this seems to be a popular font.
Hi there, my name's Andy, and I am aiming to create the World's Largest Human-edited Football Encyclopedia - Soccipedia. I chose the name because it's a similar concept to Wiki, and also sounds similar. Hopefully it will stick a bit better than some other ones.
I have already thought up a few ideas like (shuffles through diary) the top categories, sub categories and how everything interlinks. The top categories would be:
Home¬ (a quick overlay of recent updates, latest news, upcoming fixtures and featured articles)
Players¬ (would then be taken to a category list where a sample path would be 'Club>England>Premiership>Arsenal>Thierry Henry... woops sorry, I mean Francesc Fabregas'. Each level would have a search function and a show all button for that level. Each player would have his own individual profile page with stats and written profiles etc.)
Clubs¬ (would work in a similar fashion to Players)
Matches¬ (Would have 3 sections: Results, Live Scores, and Fixtures. Results would have details of match, youtube or daily motion highlights with match report. Live Scores would bring up a live vidiprinter, with links to commentary on each match and latest reports. Fixtures would have head to head stats, team news, and written previews & predictions.)
Stats¬ (would combine data from all players, clubs and matches with any stat possible. Could be a search function on left. Or a categorisation method of say This Season/Goals/Goal-Game-Ratio/Lowest/select league (all is an option)/select club (all is an option)/select player (all is option, will work well with fastest goals). Or both. Stats displayed in a top 10 (maybe customisable) table.
News¬ A simple RSS feed that takes news to begin with from BBC, Reuters and other local news services
Features¬ Articles written such as 'Top 10 bargains of the season' or 'Should the winter break be introduced?' With high quality stats to boot, it should make for convincing arguments and hot debate.
Discuss¬ A forum where users can let rip on any topic football related or site related. There will be some age restricted forums, based on what words users may use.
Each page would have a section linking to all things relevant about what is in that page. For example, in a player profile page, he will have links to all his squad members (national and club), links to recent matches, news stories, clubs, features and discussion. And in a player stat page, links like, see this players profile, or see this players club.
User generated content will be entirely written content and have nothing to do with stats I wish the site to be as accurate as possible.
I'm doing this mainly because I want it to be free, and there are a few websites out there similar to this one, but they either cost money to join, or look really tacky, or dont have the same consistency of depth, and this will have user generated content also.
I'm also doing this because I believe that a compared to other sites, if everyone is involved and not just a select few, then it will encourage site growth, and become the biggest football database on the planet.
My goals are as follows:
End of July 2007: Have all players, clubs, fixtures in place for the Premiership. Also have list of written stats up.
End of August 2007: Begin to create profiles while link building and SEO. I'll be using www.SEObook.com, www.bluehatseo.com, and www.earnersblog.com for tips (sites i check regularly and intrigue me)
End of September: Keeping a record of all stats while building a user accesible database for them. Have news section complete
End of October: Fully functioning alpha site. All tabs in place, all information streaming in automatically. Hopefully some traffic too ;)
November to June: Keep adding content to site while considering options. Either expand into rest of english leagues or stay put and work on functionality. Should be looking to expand.
As the site gets more advanced and more traffic, i hope to have personal skins for all the clubs on the site, so the user gets a but more of a personal feel. They will also be able to filter news results to suit what they are interested in.
I'll be using this blog to keep a track of my thoughts and progress. Any comments of tips, advice, criticism or general musings are greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Andy
